of those beautiful natural sights presented itself to me and has been made manifest in the “Winter Woods at Night” pen. At arm’s length, the pen reflects simple lines in black resin trimmed in nickel silver with a clip. As the pen draws nearer, though, details from the theme present themselves – a tree branch ascending from the top cap ring draws one’s eyes around to the full moon inlaid in white resin and, eventually, around to the winter constellation Orion inlaid in sterling silver. The tree branch, as well as the inner layer of each of the rings (cap, body and section), are etched to simulate the silvery bark texture that trees seem to have with moon and snow reflection on them at night. Orion the Archer will sink below our horizon here in upper New York State soon, but we’re Jabberwock" #20051

We are proud to present, “The Jabberwock,” a custom fountain pen made entirely by hand in our shop in rural Western New York State. Loosely based on the poem, “Jabberwocky,” by Lewis Carroll, we tried to reflect the whimsical nature of Carroll’s work while respecting a sense of traditional pen design and function. The final product is the culmination of several months of planning and hand-building.

The focus of the poem is on the Jabberwock, a terrifying creature, and it relates the story of a father warning his son of danger as the boy sets out to slay the imaginary beast. Through the story, the son encounters a variety imaginary flora and fauna as he seeks to slay the Jabberwock with his “vorpal sword.” The design of the metal work for this pen includes the Jabberwock which has been constructed to reflect the original drawing of the creature. On the reverses side of the cap, a “Jubjub bird” sits perched in a “Tumtum tree.” Lacking any original artwork to draw from, the designs for the bird and tree were left entirely to the imagination. The remainder of the metal work was developed to reflect the stone castle home of the young beast-slayer. The metal fittings are all constructed in nickel silver – approximately forty separate pieces of metal and seventy solder joints – and are set on a “moss green” acrylic material that reflects the eerie nature of the woods in Lewis Carroll’s poem.

In terms of function, the pen is based on a 13 mm cap thread and Jowo #6 nib. The overall length is 152 mm, the open length is 142 mm, and the total weight of the pen is 45 grams. The ink delivery allows for cartridge or converter. All body metal work is lined internally, so eyedropper filling is also possible.

In the spirit of full disclosure, the inspiration for this pen came about over forty years ago. I was sitting in a high school English classroom in the rural village where I grew up, and I was “less than interested” in the lesson for the day. I found myself leafing through the worn literature textbook to amuse myself, stumbled onto the full-page illustration across from, “Jabberwocky,” and I was lost for the remainder of the class period. I read the poem several times but it was the art that really mesmerized me. That particular year was not a great one for me with regard to English instruction (or the perpetrator thereof), and I regularly found myself back on a dog-eared page with an etching of a mythical beast and nonsense words by a poet with whom I was not yet familiar. That was the year that I fell down the rabbit hole. This pen is probably a good sign that I am still falling.

Hardy Penwrights
Default over six months. The art-piece pen is a collage of materials and techniques that also offers the very best in functionality for the user.

First published in 1911, The Secret Garden, by Francis Hodgson Burnett, tells the story of a neglected young girl coming to live with her reclusive uncle in England. It is there that she meets a boy about her age that helps her rejuvenate the neglected garden at the manor house; the summer spent making a garden grow again also rejuvenated a family. It is the story of breaking down barriers and learning empathy. I wanted to make a timeless pen that represents these timeless messages.

The themes of the book withstanding, I decided to represent the locked garden on one side of the cap and – on the other side of the cap – the other side of the gate wherein the garden has begun to grow again. The majority of the metal work is done in nickel silver with accents in bronze, mokume-gane and sterling silver. The barrels of the body were constructed from vintage Conway Stewart “Silver Storm” to take advantage of the garden colors it offers. “Cumberland Green” and “Pine” Italian acrylics trim out the rest of the pen. The cap, body and section are all accented with nickel silver “twisted vine” rings, and finished with key and keyhole finial medallions on the cap and body respectively. I added a #6 Jowo 18k gold nib (two-tone, fine width) to complete this piece. A pen cradle in matching materials and style make for a wonderful desk set.

This pen is entirely handmade in our shop in Western New York. The majority of the metal work has been constructed from sheet material, shaped and soldered. No CNC (computer-driven) equipment has been employed to create this work – just hands, tools, and a desire to raise the standard for my own work.

This pen was offered as my aloud to school children in a former life. Though considered “children’s literature,” it would be a difficult read for an American adolescent today, as it is a post-Victorian British novel. Vocabulary, idiom, and heavy dialectic conversation make it a lot to digest for a child today, but it is a great book – the message will touch your heart. -GH

Hardy The Thorn blossoms twice annually, once in the spring before the new growth comes on, and then again in the autumn late in the year. It is a symbol of constant renewal and hope. To this day, the Glastonbury Thorn is considered a holy tree, and a bough from the tree is delivered by a child of the kingdom to the reigning monarch at Buckingham Palace every year on Christmas Day. Sadly, this will be the first time in seventy years that the bough will not be received by HRM Queen Elizabeth.

The Glastonbury site is also of special consequence, as it is the burial site of Arthur and Guinevere. An ancient stone marks the spot, and an oaken tomb has been unearthed which dates appropriately with the stories of Arthurian legend. Interestingly, Glastonbury was known anciently as “Avalon.”

The Glastonbury Abbey Pen reflects the stories of the site most notably with the hand cut thorn branches and five-petal blossoms that adorn the cap and body. Gothic windows in the cap with transparent red “stained glass” are situated between buttresses so that the nib can be seen when the pen is capped. In keeping with the style of medieval brass tomb plates, the body also includes figures of Arthur and Guinevere. A red Maltese-style Templar cross in high-temp glass enamel, and a decorated nib featuring a fleur-de-lis are Templar symbols added in deference to the generations of people who found hope in the promise of the grail legends, or the search for “Holy Blood.”

Structurally, the nickel silver metalwork on the pen, all handcrafted, is built up on black acrylic with a red resin cap sleeve. A JoWo #6 broad nib and converter fill system complete the function of the pen.

It is told in the northwest of Scotland and the Outer Hebrides that seals could come ashore, shed their skin, and take on human form. While walking among us, a selchie would have to marry a man who could discover and hide her seal skin from her. She would then have to remain married until she could find the skin and return to the sea. It is further told that some could recognize the “children of the water” by their eyes – whilst walking among us, their eyes would reflect a certain sadness, a longing for the sea.

The Selchie Pen is designed to reflect that longing. The cap metalwork shows the female becoming part of a Celtic spiral which, in turn, becomes the seal. The sleeve, rings, and “waves & sand” finial medallions are all formed in nickel silver and set off by a dark blue resin with translucent blue waves throughout the material.

The pen is built around 13mm cap threads, converter filling mechanism, and a Jowo #6 nib. Dimensions: 147mm overall, 137mm open including nib, and a weight of 35g.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0012/7080/8636/products/1_8923184f-d01e-4eee-826b-da81d72460b4.jpg?v=1670949945
